Welcome to my weekly journal.
My name is Daniel D. Marquez, studying Values Education at the Philippine Normal University - Manila.
This is one of the requirements of the course, Field Study. This journal presents my personal experiences as an observer and a teacher in grade 9 at the Institute of Teaching and Learning (ITL).

Week 1 (September 25 - October 1)
This is the start of the week at PNU, but since the ITL will start next week, we only had one face-to-face meeting with our professor to discuss the things that are expected of us, the outputs, and the creation of a media plan. Our professor had also made us create activities in order to test what kind of strategies we use and put in our lesson plans. Our group was assigned to handle grade 9, which was settled via Zoom. When our professor was discussing the class dynamics, characteristics, and personalities of each class, I chose grade 9 because, just like them, I am also somehow grade conscious, so I thought that I could relate to them in some way, but the majority of it was because they were described as being quiet all the time, and I like a quiet class.
Week 2 (October 2-8)
This is the week when our group has mutually agreed on who our partners will be for the group demo teaching as well as the chronological order of the teachers who will discuss the lessons per week. My partner was Rosa Laudencia, and I would say that I am very confident about our team because I have been making lesson plans with her since I was in my 2nd year, which was facilitated by Professor Marte as one of our major subjects. With this, I already know our group dynamics, strengths, and weaknesses. We were assigned the week 5 topic, Lipunang Ekonomiya. Everything was decided via a wheel of names, which is a randomizer app.
Week 3 (October 9-15)
The first observation that we did last week with Professor Borja gave us a lot of knowledge and tips on what to do for the following weeks that we will be handling the grade 9 students. I was inspired by how philosophical, critical, and personal the processing questions were being asked of the students, and I ought to imitate that. Because personally, I learned the most from that kind of questioning, if I was forced to think hard and critically, I could remember and understand the topic easily and longer. This is also the week when the first set of demo teachers: Josefa and Sarah handled the class. Lastly, our group also researched and created a seminar flow and information about enhancing students' promptness.
Week 4 (October 16-22)
This week is the most tiring one because I need to accomplish the requirement that I need to pass on to the University Health Services Unit (UHSU) as soon as possible. Because of the student discount, I only needed to pay 700 pesos plus for my medical exam: urine analysis, chest x-ray, physical exam, complete blood count (CBC), and drug test. This is also the week when Sevgi and Rosa accomplished their demo teaching for week 3.
Week 5 (October 23 - 29)
This is the week when Athena and Judhel accomplished their demo teaching for week 4. I personally really like the delivery of Athena; it is very smooth and so prepared that the quiet grade 9 students were able to be engaged and have fun with the activities and discussion. From my observation, grouping the class into their respectable circle of friends from the start until the end of the class is one effective way to enhance classroom participation. This is also the week when we were tested by our knowledge and skills in developing and analyzing test items using Blooms taxonomy.
Week 6 (November 6 - 12)
This week will likely be the most exciting, stressful, yet fulfilling week during my stay in ITL. It is time for Rosa and I to take the stage to showcase our demo teaching for week 5, Lipunang ekonomiya. Because the topic is heavy on cognitive content, I specifically designed my lesson plan to have a lot of processing, bridging, and formative questions in order to let the students know that they should be actively listening and understanding my discussion in order to answer my questions. A lot of my comments were about me being "masungit" in tone, as they said, but I personally think that it is one way to ensure and establish authority and to unconsciously command them to listen to me.
