What is matter?
You are looking at it. You are holding it. You are breathing matter in. You are matter. Matter is anything that has Mass and takes up space.
How do we know if an object has mass?
If you put a drop of water on a scale, the scale would go up, but just a little bit. Still, as long as an object weighs something, it has mass, and therefore it is matter.
It is important to remember that all matter takes up space.
Did you know that air is also matter? Air takes up space, and has weight. Air is considered a gas, one of three forms of matter.
The three forms of matter can be found in this picture.
Can you find all three forms of matter? One is a lot harder to see than the others!
All matter is either a solid, liquid, or gas.
What is a gas?
Substances that are not fixed in volume or shape are considered Gasses. Gasses are not rigid and can be easily compressed.
What is a solid?
Substances that are
fixed in shape and
volume are solids.
Solids are rigid, and
cannot be compressed easily.
What is a liquid?
Substances that are not fixed in shape, but fixed in volume are liquids. Liquids are not rigid, and cannot be compressed easily.
