What is Recycling?

Recycling is the process of converting waste materials, that would usually be thrown away, into new materials and objects. Recycling waste reduces the amount of harmful materials produced and reduces energy usage, therefore benefitting the environment.

What are Recyclable Materials?

Not all materials can be recycled, but there are plenty of materials that can and should be recycled. Recyclable materials include:

Plastic

Paper

Cardboard

Cans

Batteries

Glass

Clothes

Electronics

Wood

Metal

If you are unsure about whether you can recycle something or not, there is usually information on the packaging, or your local council should be able to let you know.

Why Should We Recycle?

Now you know a bit more about recycling, you might be wondering, 'why should we recycle?'. There are lots of great reasons as to why we should recycle, including:

Recycling conserves resources - when we recycle our waste, it is turned into new things! This means that we don't have to use up more and more natural resources making new products. Instead, we can use old recycled materials to create new products. A lot of water bottles are recycled, and you can even get notebooks made out of old tyres!

Recycling saves energy - using recycled materials in the manufacturing process takes up a lot less energy than

it does to use newly sourced materials.

helps to protect the environment - recycling means we don't have to gather new, raw materials, which causes water and air pollution. Recycling also saves energy, which means it also reduces greenhouse gas emissions, which helps to combat climate change.

Recycling reduces landfill - everything you don't recycle will end up in a landfill. Some materials can take hundreds, if not thousands, of years to decompose. The more we recycle, the less material ends up in landfill.

Recycling can reduce your carbon footprint - everything we do on this planet leaves a trace. Recycling can help to reduce the amount of damage we all do to the environment.

Recycling Facts

In the UK, we recycle around 80% of paper.

Paper is one of the most recycled materials.

It only takes six days to turn old books, newspapers, and magazines into new ones.

The recycling of paper takes 70% less energy than making new paper from raw materials.

It can take plastic up to 500 years to decompose.

55% of plastic waste ends up in landfills and the ocean.

Not all plastics can be recycled, but many can.

Glass is 100% recyclable.

Once in landfill, food waste can release methane, a greenhouse gas.

Enough plastic is thrown away each year to circle the earth four times.

Teaching Children the Importance of Recycling

As soon as children are old enough to begin tidying away their own spaces, or helping the teacher or parent to clean up, they should be informed about recycling.

Recycling is the process of collecting and re-using materials that we would usually have thrown away with the rest of our rubbish. By recycling, we can minimise the number of harmful pollutants in the atmosphere by making sure these materials are kept away from landfills, which produce a lot of greenhouse gases.

The main things that we recycle are:

Paper and card

Glass

Plastic

Metals such as aluminium and steel.

You can also help minimise the amount of food waste that ends up in landfills by composting fruits, vegetables and any other dead plants.

Within the scope of project our English teacher Dilek Gökce and our students visited Giresun Municipality Climate Change and Zero Waste Directorate to get more detailed information about recycling.

Mr. Fatih Memiş,Climate Change and Zero Waste Manager gave detailed informationto our students about the importance of recyling,its types and how its realized with the examples.At the end of the visit,Memiş answered the questionsthat our students curious about and gave our students hats and recycled pens.Thanks to Mr Fatih Memiş,our English Teacher and students.

As part of our etwinning project, the fifth class of our primary school along with the english teacher Helen Foti visited the environmental centre of Mouzaki in our area. During the visit the students had the opportunity to get information about how different materials are sorted, processed and prepared for recycling.

It was a hand-on way to understand the impact of recycling on the environment and how we can all play a role in reducing waste. The students asked questions, watched relevant videos, interacted with the people in charge there and asked questions about new things they would like to know!

The recycling facility was visited and our students were very surprised. They were happy with the different experience.

Details of the recycling organization in our city were learned.

Within the scope of the 'Don't Throw Your Future in the Trash. Recycle!' project, my students and I visited the Recycling Separation Facility of Yakakent Municipality. The Mayor and the Cleaning Affairs Manager explained to our students in detail how they carry out the separation processes and how they are later processed in the factories. Students learned about recycling and zero waste

THE RECYCLING EXPERT CAME TO OUR AID, PROVIDING US WITH VITAL INFORMATION ABOUT WASTE AND HOW IT CAN BE REUSED TO AVOID POLLUTION.HE CLASSIFIED THESE AND EXPLAINED TO US WHAT THE PERIOD OF DECOMPOSITION IS. WE AS STUDENTS WILL REUSE WASTE BECAUSE WE CARE ABOUT NATURE-OUR HOME.

Within the scope of our project, Environmental Engineer Gözde Karaibrahim and Yavuz Mert from the Directorate of Climate and Zero Waste came to our school to give information about the importance of recycling, how it is done and its types. After the information about recycling, they watched a cartoon film on the subject and answered their questions.

Our experts, who said that they put recycling bins in every neighbourhood in Giresun, gave interesting information such as that frying oils are recycled. They told the students that they can bring these oils to the municipalities to be recycled instead of pouring them into the sinks or throwing them away.

Having an expert on recycling visit our school,as part of our etwinning project, was a great chance for my students and me to deepen our understanding of environmental sustainability. Mrs Parisi shared insights on the recycling process with the students and gave us practical tips that we can all follow in our everyday lives to improve recycling practices.

She showed us how everyday materials can be transformed into new things, thus promoting a more circular economy. The students were engaged in questions to Mrs Parisi and had a look at the leaflets she brought to our class. She finally agreed on sending our school recycling bins appropriate for young children to use!

The recycling expert came to our classroom and gave information.

Mrs. Miruna organized an information and awareness campaign on material recycling, dedicated to students. The purpose of this visit is to develop a pro-recycling behavior. The lady spoke to us about selective recycling systems, the importance of recycling for the environment and for the health of people and animals. She presented us with interesting and educational videos about this topic.

OPENING A RECYCLING STAND

23 NİSAN PRIMARY SCHOOL/DİLEK GÖKCE

In order to raise awareness within the scope of the E TWINNING project named "Don't Throw Away Your Future Recyle It!", which was founded and carried out by English teacher Dilek GÖKCE, a recycling information stand was opened in Giresun Atapark with the support of Giresun Municipality Climate Change and Zero Waste Directorate.

Teachers and students distributed brochures about recycling at the stand and informed the visitors by conducting a survey on the subject.

Our teacher Gökhan GENÇ added a promotional stand to the entrance door of the school and the project was introduced to all students of the school.

One of the first things my students and I set off doing was to make ourselves recycling bins to put in one corner of our classroom. These bins were given a different colour to be destined for different materials students use at school, that is plastic, paper and glass. Not only that, they invited all classes that use our classroom for the english lesson to follow their example!

THE RECYCLING STAND HAS BEEN OPENED IN OUR SCHOOL.

We have selective bins in several hallways, but some students did not use them properly.

Within the scope of the project, chewing gum used in the production of shoes and recycled is collected from the streets of Amsterdam. Approximately 1 kg of chewing gum is used for every four pairs of shoes produced.
Gumdrop's products made from recycled chewing gum are not limited to shoes.

Since chewing gum is made from rubber, which is the raw material for many things, Gum-tec offers unlimited potential.

The company's products include keychain-shaped gum collection boxes placed on the streets to prevent chewing gum from being thrown on the ground, and products such as combs, boots, door mats, pens, forks, storage containers and frisbees made from recycled gum.

Feel The Peel (Orange Juice Vending Machine)

One of the most remarkable recycling projects of recent times is Feel The Peel, the orange juice vending machine. This project offers the use of bioplastic cups instead of using plastic or cardboard cups that are used only once.

With the Feel The Peel project, orange peels used to make orange juice are recycled. Bioplastic cups are then produced from these peels.

Consumers drink orange juice from these recycled glasses. It is a recycling project with extremely high standards. It is a system that utilises orange peels while reducing the use of paper and plastic.

Platio- (Solar Panelled Flooring Project)

Platio, ie the solar panel flooring project, was developed by the Hungarian origin Platio company. It is aimed to convert solar energy into electrical energy by storing solar energy with solar panel systems made of recycled plastic. Thus, people sitting in banks have the opportunity to charge their phones or tablets through these panels. The company, which plans to rebuild the future of cities with this project, offers a creative recycling project.

Print Your City

One of the most important recycling applications is to produce urban furniture from plastic waste. With this project developed by The New design company, plastic wastes are utilised to produce urban furniture that people can use for many years. It is possible to see urban furniture and benches developed within the scope of this project in many places on the streets of Rotterdam.
