Dear Diary, February 9, 1519
Today, I was playing a game of Tlachtli, (A game where you have to pass a rubber ball into a concrete ring) when my mom suddenly called me. She told me that I forgot to harvest the peppers and tomatoes. While walking to the fields, I heard some weird sounds from the shore. There were enormous wooden shapes, with white waving cloths on the top. Footsteps along the shore accompanied these. I decided not to pursue these and headed back home. The people who landed on the shore must have been gods.
Dear Diary, March 25, 1519
Today some of the gods found Tenochtitlan. My neighbors were bowing and some were even offering their slaves. These gods seemed peaceful and were very white-skinned compared to us. They had interesting clothing that covered their whole body, and some of them had huge shiny metal plating on them. I had never seen anything like this. The gods also brought many different gadgets like wooden sticks with holes and black tubes with wheels which intimidated me.
Dear Diary, August 16, 1519
Today, the leader of the gods has demanded to meet Montezuma, our leader. His name is Hernando Cortes and he has an army of six hundred men. They all had weird clothing and metal plating, and I was worried. They marched through the valley of Tenochtitlan with horses and lots of armored men, nothing I had ever seen before. We have given them gifts and riches, so I hope they do not turn hostile on us. All the civilians are very peaceful toward them, but I am still suspicious.
Dear Diary, November 14, 1519
Things have turned to the worst. Some of our men attacked a Spanish base off the coast, and several were killed. Cortes arranged a meeting with Montezuma and accused him of planning the attack, so he took Montezuma hostage. The civilians thought that Cortes had murdered our emperor. When Cortes’ force tried retreating out of Tenochtitlan at night it was caught and nearly destroyed. These acts of hate the gods are doing toward us are outrageous.
Dear Diary, June 24, 1520
Cortes has turned evil. During the festival of Toxcatl in May, Cortes ordered his men to slaughter thousands of people attending. The people were outraged and attacked Cortes’ forces once again. Cortes managed to return to Tenochtitlan and forced Montezuma to plead with his people to stop attacking the Spanish. Cortes forced Montezuma onto a roof and was killed by stones and spears thrown at him by the enraged civilians. If this continues, this kingdom will collapse, and all-out war will break out.
Dear Diary, June 30, 1520
Cortes tried to evacuate Tenochtitlan under the darkness, knowing he had lost control. Before Montezuma died, he asked if Cortes could protect his children. Cortes tried sneaking out at night, but they were spotted. We killed half their men and many of their horses. However, Montezuma's request was not fulfilled. Montezuma's two children had been slaughtered with Cortes' soldiers. Some soldiers who were captured were sacrificed to our gods. My family is worried and we hope that we don't get caught in the slaughtering too.
Dear Diary, January 13, 1521
Everything is happening so fast. Another guy was chosen to be Montezuma’s successor, and then he died three months later from smallpox. How did our beloved empire end up like this? Those dang Spanish are destroying our empire and brought some deadly diseases with them. Anyways, another person named Cuauhtemoc was appointed to be our king. I hope he can fend off those evil Europeans so we can continue growing and surviving.
