Not so long ago in a little penguin town in southern
Antarctica, there lived a young penguin named Ponce.
Ponce and his mommy and daddy made their home in a cozy
igloo near the icy water, and they were all very happy.

Ponce had many activities to keep him entertained
in Antarctica. Besides eating lots of fish with his
mommy and daddy, he loved to swim in the water
with them. He always felt like he was flying!

Best of all, his mommy and daddy loved to help
Ponce make snow cones, and they would all eat them
together on the back porch of the igloo.

On especially snowy days, school would be
canceled, and Ponce and his friends would have a
day of fun. Ponce loved sliding down the slopes on
his belly, making snowmen, and playing chase in
the ocean. Whatever they did together, Ponce was
always glad that he had such great friends to have
fun with.

But after a while, Ponce began to get bored
with his little Antarctic town. And not just
bored. He began to get terribly, terribly cold.
Now, Ponce knew that all a little penguin had
to do to stay warm was huddle together with all
the other penguins until the cold front passed.
But when Ponce was in the huddle, he couldn’t go
swimming in the water, or eat a snow cone, or
slide on the slopes, or make a snowman. And
these were some of Ponce’s favorite things to do.
The fact that he couldn’t do his favorite things
during much of the year made him bored, and he
decided it was time for a change.

So Ponce went to his mommy and daddy and
told them, “Mommy, Daddy, I’m going to move
away. I don’t want to be cold anymore, and I
want to be able to do my favorite things all of
the time. I’m moving to Florida, where it is warm
enough to do fun things all year long.” Ponce’s
mommy and daddy told him they were sad that he
had to go, and that they would miss him very much.
But they said they hoped he would visit often, and to
be safe and have fun.

The next morning, Ponce set out for Florida. It was a
long and tiring journey, and by the time Ponce got
there, the only thing he could think about was finding
a delicious snow cone to cool him off. Thankfully, he
found a truck that sold snow cones, and he ordered
an extra large blue one. He waddled over to a bench
and sat down to eat it. He looked down, and to his
surprise, his wings were covered with a sticky, blue
liquid. What was happening? He looked in his cup to
find that his snow cone had gotten smaller. Sadly,
Ponce finished what was left of his snow cone and
thought of the snow cones he made with his mommy
and daddy. This was not a good start to his new
Florida life.
