Στη πλαγιά ενός λόφου υπήρχε ένα πανέμορφο δάσος. Ψηλά δέντρα, όμορφοι θάμνοι και πολύχρωμα λουλούδια το έκαναν ένα υπέροχο σπίτι για τα πουλιά και τα ζώα που ζούσαν σε αυτό. Συχνά το επισκέπτονταν άνθρωποι για να απολαύσουν τη δροσιά, που τους πρόσφερε, και τον καθαρό αέρα.

On the slope of a hill there was a beautiful forest. Tall trees, beautiful bushes and colorful flowers made it a wonderful home for the birds and animals that lived in it. It was often visited by people to enjoy the coolness it offered and the fresh air.

Σήμερα ήταν μια υπέροχη ζεστή μέρα. Τα πουλιά κελαηδούσαν χαρούμενα και τα ζωάκια του δάσους έτρεχαν και έπαιζαν. Ξαφνικά την γαλήνη τους διέκοψαν οι φωνές πουλιών, που κατευθύνονταν προς το δάσος τρομαγμένα.  Τι να είχε συμβεί, που τα είχε τρομάξει τόσο;

Today was a lovely warm day. The birds were chirping happily and the forest animals were running and playing. Suddenly their peace was interrupted by the voices of birds heading towards the forest in fright. What had happened, that I had scared them so much?

Τα πουλιά και τα ζώα του δάσους περίμεναν να φτάσουν κοντά τα πουλιά για να τους πουν τι είχε συμβεί. Το σμήνος των πουλιών έφτασε στο  μικρό ξέφωτο που είχαν συγκεντρωθεί όλα τα ζώα του δάσους.

The birds and the animals of the forest I waited for the birds to come near to tell them what had happened. The flock of birds reached the small clearing where all the animals of the forest had gathered.

Μια κουκουβάγια που ήταν ανάμεσα στο σμήνος πήρε το λόγο.
-Καλοί μας φίλοι, το δάσος όπου κατοικούσαμε πήρε φωτιά! Κάποιοι απρόσεχτοι άνθρωποι ήρθαν να ψήσουν. Όμως φυσούσε δυνατός αέρας, μερικές σπίθες πετάχτηκαν σε ξερόκλαδα και σύντομα τα δέντρα πήραν φωτιά.

An owl that was among the flock spoke.

-Our good friends, the forest where we lived caught fire! Some careless people came to bake. But a strong wind was blowing, some sparks were thrown on dry branches and soon the trees were on fire.

Our lives were in danger as well as all the other animals that lived there. The fire department came but the damage was done. Much of the forest that was our home was destroyed.

Κινδύνεψε η ζωή μας, όπως και όλων των άλλων ζώων που ζούσαν εκεί.  Ήρθε η πυροσβεστική αλλά το κακό είχε γίνει. Μεγάλο μέρος του δάσους, που ήταν το σπίτι μας καταστράφηκε.

- Αυτό δεν μπορούμε να το αφήσουμε έτσι, είπε το ελάφι.   

Αποφάσισαν να κάνουν μια επιτροπή και να πάνε στους ανθρώπους για να τους πουν τι τους προσφέρουν τα δάση και πόσο κακό προκαλούν με την απροσεξία τους. Συμμάχους τους κάλεσαν τα παιδιά, που νοιάζονται για το περιβάλλον και αγαπούν τα ζώα.

- We can't leave this like that, said the deer. They decided to make a committee and go to the people to tell them what the forests offer them and how much harm they are causing through their carelessness. They invited children, who care about the environment and love animals, as their allies.
