Long ago, in ancient China, people believed in a fearsome creature that could swallow the sun and plunge the world into darkness. This is the legend of the Sun Devourer.
Legend had it that the Sun Devourer would attack the sun during a solar eclipse, seeking to seize its power for itself."
To frighten the Sun Devourer away, the people would bang drums, clang pots, and shoot arrows into the sky."
To defeat the Sun Devourer and restore light to the world, the Jade Emperor, ruler of the heavens, called upon the legendary archer, Hou Yi. Armed with his trusty bow and arrows, Hou Yi shot down the Sun Devourer, causing it to release the sun and flee back into the depths of the heavens.
Since then, it was believed that during a solar eclipse, the Sun Devourer would briefly return, seeking vengeance for its defeat. To protect themselves, people would engage in various rituals and ceremonies to ward off the dragon and ensure the sun's safe return.
