"Jupiter is 1,000 times the
size of the Earth, and--Marco!"
11-year old Marco looked up
from his notebook, where he
had been doodling pictures of
Batman when he was supposed
to be taking notes.

"Marco, what are you doing?" his teacher,
Mrs. Bennett, was questioning him. She had a
hawk-like nose, short, shaggy hair that
seemed to cover her face. Therefore, Marco
had no idea how she could see.

She was a scary sight. Some kids said she was
a witch. Others said that she was mean so the
students would respect her, but she was nice
on the inside. Marco didn't believe anything
anyone said. He just didn't trust her.

Just then, the recess bell rang. Happy to
have an excuse to get out of the classroom,
Marco jumped up. But Mrs. Bennett grasped
his shirt collar and pulled him back. "You will
stay in for afternoon recess. Go on, now, go
have fun."

He caught up with his friends in the hallway.
"Gee, what was that all about?" asked
Henry.
"Sounds like you're in trouble."
"No big deal," Marco answered. "I just have
to stay in for afternoon recess."
"Darn, we needed you for kickball," Bryce
snapped his fingers. "We'll never beat Abram's
team without you."

"Sorry, but I guess it will only be for a few
minutes. Otherwise she wouldn't have let me
go back in the classroom."
But he would soon regret that. When he
entered the classroom, Mrs. Bennett got him
to work right away, copying the dictionary. At
one point he asked,"Why am I doing this?" but
she just ignored it and told him,"Get back to
work!"

He was frustrated. He sort of figured that he
would be doing this for quite a while if he
didn't hurry. So he rushed to finish, and when
he finally completed it, Mrs. Bennett snapped,
"Way too sloppy. Do it over!"

Right after that, the bell rang, and he
hurried to get to his locker and get his math
stuff. On his way back, he scanned the crowd
of kids for his buddies. He saw Ulysses, Henry,
and several other friends of his. He went to
see what was up, and potentially discovered
that Abram's team had won again.

The red-cheeked guys explained that they
were winning, but the bases were loaded with
Abram up and about ten minutes left in recess,
and he
kicked a grand slam, which started a big rally,
and that was how they lost.
