Spain is located at the Iberian Península, of which it occupies
approximately 80% (the remaining 20% are occupied by
Portugal), in the southwest of Europe. In the north Spain
borders on France and Andorra, with the Pyrenees as a
natural frontier. Spain is the 3rd country of Europe in
extension and the 5th in population.
There are five big mountain ranges crossing the country, and
about 50% of it are located at an elevated plain. Landscapes
are extremely varied, some almost desert-like, others green
and fertile, and of course there are the long coasts, in the
east along Mediterranean Sea from Pyrenees to Gibraltar, and
in the west (the major part of the Iberian peninsula's western
coast is occupied by Portugal) along the Atlantic Ocean and
Cantabrian Sea

The most distinctive geographical features of Spain are its
mountains. They are so widespread that Richard Ford, the
famous 19th-century English traveler called Spain’s topography
“almost one mountain”.
After Switzerland, Spain is the most mountainous country in
Europe. Numerous mountain chains cross the landscape like
protruding ribs, mostly in an east west direction.

Spain's population density, lower than that of most
European countries, is roughly equivalent to New England's.
In recent years, following a longstanding pattern in the rest
of Europe, rural populations are moving to cities.
Spain has no official religion. The constitution of 1978
disestablished the Roman Catholic Church as the official
state religion, while recognizing the role it plays in Spanish
society. More than 90% of the population are at least
nominally Catholic.

Spain has a predominantly warm Mediterranean climate, with
dry summers and winters with balanced temperatures. Here
you can enjoy more than 3,000 hours of sunshine per year. It
is no surprise, then, that this is one of the warmest parts of
Europe.
When talking of weather, special mention should be made of
the Canary Islands. Their special location, facing the coast of
Africa, gives them a benign climate with mild temperatures
(22ºC year-round average on the coasts), with only small
temperature differences between day and night, whatever the
season.
Variety is the main characteristic of the climate here, due to
Spain’s immense geographical diversity.
