I'm Awab, and I'm basically from Jeddah, Saudi Arabia. I am 14 years old. Every oncoming year of Ramadan fills me with excitement. To my family and me, this month is super special, filled with traditions, prayers, and lots of delicious food. It always gives me this feeling that finally Ramadan is here.
Everything is different when Ramadan comes: Jeddah takes on a different mood being merrier and nicer-nicely lit streets and houses, and shops are taking Ramadan themes in their windows. Everywhere around the city, Athan reminds you to stop and ponder for a while. It's just like the whole city is alive with spirituality and pulling you toward Allah, which makes it really special for everyone.
One of my favourite things in Ramadan is how it brings family together. Every evening, we always break our fast together at sunset. We would always start with dates and Arabic coffee. Then comes the main meal, and it's always something delicious, like kabsa or sambosas. My Grandma cooks up these amazing things, and we're all sitting around, sharing stories and laughing. It's a time to catch up with everyone and just enjoy each other's company.
My extended family usually comes over, too, during Ramadan. We have big Iftar dinners, and the house just reverberates with noise and laughter. Sometimes my cousins and I play games after the meal, and every night just feels like a mini party! These gatherings strengthen our bonds and remind us of how important family actually is.
The month of Ramadan is also about drawing closer to God. Every day, we wake up very early for Suhoor-the meal in the morning before daylight. My family and I come together at the table, and it is nice to begin our day together. Then we perform Fajr the morning prayer as a family. I try to read more of the Quran during Ramadan. I read the Quran fully every Ramadan. It is time for reflection, and I am empowered to be a better person.
