The New York Jets have a long history in the National Football League of navigating many ups and downs. They are known for their iconic white and green colors that have captured the hearts of New York fans. The Jets are defined by loyal fans that cheer each season, waiting for the Jets to rise to the top once again.
Jets Founding
The New York Jets were originally founded in 1960 as the Titans of New York and was apart of the members of the American Football League. The team was initially owned by Harry Wismer. However, the original team struggled both on and off the field due to financial issues. Although they faced these challenges, Wismer set the foundation for a prosperous team in the NFL.
Rebranding
In 1963, Sonny Werblin and his team purchased the Titans of New York. They decided to rebrand the team and renamed it to the iconic, New York Jets. They also decided on the green and white color scheme. This rebranding started a new chapter for the failing team and brought fresh energy, perspective, and financing to the franchise. The team also moved their games to occur int he Shea Stadium in Queens which expanded their fan base and made their presence in New York bigger.
Joe Namath
In 1965, the Jets decided to draft the quarterback, Joe Namath, which majorly altered the Jets history for many decades to come. Joe Namath was a quarterback from Alabama and was one of the most talented quarterbacks in his era. His arrival to the New York Jets was pivotal and the team became a talking point across the country.
Super Bowl
The Jets hired Weeb Ewbank, a successful leader who had won two NFL championships with the Baltimore Colts, as head coach. HIs coaching style made the Jets a solid contender in the AFL. In 1969, Namath guaranteed the Jets a victory before Super Bowl 3 which is where they faced his old team. The Jets won 16-7 which was the first AFL victory against the NFL in the Super Bowl. This huge win is still one of the Jet's biggest achievements.
