Author's Note - This book is based on true events. The war described in it was real and children had to run away from their family and most of them did not return for many years. Jason is not real but Jason's story is like other people's story, I also read A Long Walk to Water and other non fiction resources I read before writing this book. They provided most of my background information.

Jason is a 13 year old boy from Southern Sudan. He loves to play baseball, soccer and football. He lives with his parents and is an only child.
One day while Jason is at school he suddenly hears gunshots and bombs going off. He hides under his desk until he hears his teacher yell for the students to run out into the bush and to not come back to the village.

Once he believes it is safe he starts walking away from his village. Jason finds a group of people from his village that he recognizes. He joins them, they are going to a city that has a refugee camp. He learns they will have to cross a desert and the Nile River to get there.

While the group of boys are walking and talking to each other they come to two paths. One leading to Lion Country the other towards the Nile. They go straight towards the Nile.

Before crossing the Nile River to the Akobo desert the group of boys stopped to get water from the villiage. They wouldn't survive the Akobo Desert without it.
