In the beginning, the devil shattered
his mirror. These splinters got into
people's hearts and eyes, freezing their
hearts like blocks of ice and making
their eyes like the troll-mirror itself,
seeing only the bad and ugly in
people and things.

A little boy Kai and a little girl Gerda live next door
to each other. The two families grow vegetables and
roses in window boxes placed on the gutters.

Gerda's grandmother tells
the children about the
Snow Queen, who is ruler
over the "snow bees".

eyes.

Snow Queen is in a
white fur-coat driving
a curious white sleigh
carriage in a winter
day.

She takes Kai in her sleigh
to her palace.

There once was a little
girl named Gerda,
whose best friend Kai
was stolen away by
the snow queen.
This made Gerda very
sad and lonely. One
day she decided she
would go and rescue
him. So off she went,
searching the vast
world by herself, to
see if anyone could
tell her where Kai had
gone.

Gerda searched high
and low for Kai. She
traveled through the
woods. She talked to
the stream. She
followed twisting
paths, but she could
not find a trace of her
beloved Kai.

Finally Gerda came upon a cute little cottage with a
flower garden. The old lady inside came out and rushed
Gerda in to the house. The old lady reprimanded Gerda
for wandering around all by herself, as old ladies tend to
do.
Gerda felt very peaceful inside the cute little cottage. In
fact she felt so peaceful that she forgot she was
supposed to be searching for Kai. Long days pasted
away as Gerda stayed with the old woman and played
and slept in the garden.
One day while Gerda was taking a nap she rolled over
and saw that there was a rose growing in the garden.
Upon seeing the rose, Gerda was reminded of Kai, as
they used to plant roses together. She immediately
remembered her mission, left the cute cottage and
continued on her mission to find Kai.

More determined
than ever, Gerda
enthusiastically
search for Kai, she
looked under
bridges and looked
into the depths of
lakes. She asked
the stars if they
could tell her
where Kai had
gone, but they
would only twinkle
back in response.

One day Gerda
heard a rumor about
a boy who
resembled Kai. It
was said that this
boy had gone to a
princess to seek out
her hand in
marriage.
Gerda was so
excited at the
possibility of
meeting Kai, that
she rushed over to
the Kingdom to see
if it was true.

When Gerda reached the castle, she sought an audience
with the Prince and Princess of the land, as it was the
prince who was said the resemble her beloved Kai.
Yet upon being introduced, she immediately knew that
he was not Kai. She turned to leave, but the prince and
Princess asked her to stay, or to at least explain why
she had come to request an audience with them.
When Gerda told her story, the Prince and Princess were
very sympathetic towards her, and told her that they
would help her in her search. They fed her and gave her
new warm clothes, and even gave her a carriage of gold
and their best horses to ride in.
Gerda set off again, thankful for the kindness bestowed
on her by the gracious Prince and Princess of the Land.
