Dedicated to Amelia C. even though she also worked on this project.

Our story starts with two elements, who live together on the periodic table. Sodium (Na)
and Chlorine (Cl).

Even though they lived together, they were kept separate. Sodium lived among her friends in the Alkaline Earth Metals in Period 3, while Chlorine spent her days with her buddies the Halogens, also on Period 3
They had never met each other, but it's important that you know, (as all the other elements knew) neither of them liked to share.
Sodium and Chlorine both owned electrons. They each had a few full orbitals but on their outer orbital they had electrons called "valence electrons." Valence electrons are the electrons that their other element friends share with
each other when they bond.
Sodium has 1 valence electron,
and Chlorine has 7.

They lived ever so peacefully, until they were taken from their homes, and forced together.

What?! You get away! You greedy electron thief!
Hey! Get away from me!
They didn't really get along.

Chlorine is such an insensitive, selfish, doofus. She gets all up in my business and calls ME an electron thief!??

I'm just chillin'
Thank goodness that electron thief left on her own! I couldn't stand another MINUTE of her!
I am The Great Osmium. I have ruled over these lands for centuries, and now is not the time for fighting.

Ahhhhhh!!!!!
Chlorine stared in shock at the Great Osmium. What was this thing?

Don't be frightened young friend. I'm here to teach you about bonds. Sodium and you have been chosen.
The Great Osmium then left to find Sodium.

I have to bond with CHLORINE?!!!
She's so mean!!

The Great Osmium didn't travel far, before it caught up with Sodium, and explained to her what needed to be done.
The two of you have been specially selected to bond together, so you must put aside your differences.
