Industrialization had begun in 1833, and Chicago had become a town. It had been a small town near Lake Michigan with only a few hundred people. There had been many Farmers, traders, and dock workers.

1837
Chicago Becomes a City: Chicago had become a city with growing businesses and trade. There were many shopkeepers, blacksmiths, and carpenters.

1840s
Chicago had become a busy trading port. Ships brought goods in and out of Chicago through the Great Lakes. There were many sailors, dockhands, and merchants.

1848
A couple years later the Illinois and Michigan Canal had opened. This caused a connection to rivers for easy shipping of goods.Many jobs during this time period were canal builders, boat operators and traders.

1848
Additionally in the same year the first railroad had been created. The Galena and Chicago union railroad helped move goods faster.

1850
Two years after the first railroad Chicago had become a transportation hub. This causing Chicago to be the main shipping center. There had been an increase in warehouse workers and train station clerks.

1860
During this time period, Chicagos population had boomed. Many people had moved to Chicago for the job opportunities. There had been a huge increase in factors workers and store owners.
Soon after the population boomed the union stockyards had opened and Chicago had become famous for meatpacking and meat processing.
1865


1871
Unfortunately later after that Chicago had gone through the great Chicago fire. The fire had destroyed most of the city.

1879
Fortunately after Chicago had began to rebuild and the first skyscraper in Chicago had been built.

Factories had SKYROCKETED. There had been a huge increase in tool making, clothes making, and food. There had also been a huge increase in job opportunities.
1880’s

1886
The Haymarket Affair had happened. There were big protests where workers had fought for better pay and working conditions.
