The Palace started out as a hunting lodge and
retreat for Louis Xlll and his family. In 1661
Louis Xllll redesigned the hunting lodge into a
grand palace. In 1682 the palace was
announced as the official residence of the
royal court. After the death of Louis Xllll in
1715 the palace was abandoned. After the
French Revolution the palace was nearly
destroyed.

The Galerie des glaces otherwise known as the
famous Hall of Mirrors with it's 17 large glass
mirrors facing 17 large windows. At opposite
ends of the hall symbolizing the Salon of Peace
and Salon of War. The peace treaty of World
War I was signed in the Hall of Mirrors.

The Queen's bedchamber is the largest
bedroom in the palace. She was required to
give birth in public so there had to be enough
room for up to 200 courtiers and doctors.

The Opéra Royal is works of Ange-Jacques
Gabriel. In 1770 it was the largest auditorium
in Europe. Ange-Jacques Gabriel designed it for
the use of parties and performances. The Opéra
Royal can hold up to 1,400 spectators.
Dauphin and Marie-Antoinette were the first to
be married here.

Louis XIV, in 1707 moved his bed chamber
east-west to see the rising sun. Above his
bed is the marvelous painting of France
watching over the King in his slumber by
Nicolas Coustou. It is likely that Louis XIV
died in this room on September 1,1715.

The Guard room is where 12 guards stand, at
the bottom of the "Marble Staircase" night and
day to watch over the queen. This room is
made out of marble tiles and today still has the
preserved 17th century decor.
