Its the summer before they go off to college so
they have to do something big and make it
memorable. Abbie and Rebecca decide that they
are going to take a road trip across the US to
explore all of the natural beauty of America and
get away from civilization. They pack up
everything and put it in their Jeep Wrangler,
ready for their adventure.

They start out their road trip by going to Cedar
Island, which is around 5 hours away from
Mooresville. When they get to Cedar Island they
come across a small brochure stands so they
take a few brochures to look at before they
explore Cedar Island.

The brochure says “Cedar Island is around
11,000 acres of irregularly-flooded, brackish
marsh. The main marsh plants include black
needlerush and saltmarsh cordgrass. The
woodland areas are dominated by loblolly which
is a pine tree. The marsh and surrounding
waters provide wintering habitat for thousands
of ducks and nesting habitat for colonial
waterbirds.”

As they hike and explore the island they take many pictures
to capture the beauty. They decide to try crabbing while they
are there although they are unsuccessful in their attempt to
catch any.

Although they are allowed to fish they decided against it
because they weren’t very successful with crabbing.
Unfortunately since they can’t camp on this National Wildlife
Refuge because they find a small motel to sleep at before our
long days of driving that are ahead.

The next couple of days they drive across the country to
reach their next destinations. In probably the longest car
ride either of them had ever been on, they traveled to Zion,
Utah which is 2,490 miles from Cedar Island and 36 straight
hours of driving. The wait was worth it. Zion is a 229 square
mile national park that features Zion Canyon which is 15
miles long and a half a mile deep.

The first thing they did was pack a bookbag for hiking! They
hiked to a peak to get an absolutely brilliant view of the
park. Zion contains amazingly beautiful sandstones. The
history of the park was what we found most awing. Nearly
12,000 years ago the first people inhabited Zion and created
petroglyphs on the walls of the stones.

These were little pictures carved onto the stones that show
people and animals, amongst other things. Many of these
pictures are a mystery and hard to figure out. The
petroglyphs were in a hidden, restricted part of the part
shown to us by some locals. They were NOT aloud to touch
the carvings under ANY circumstance, that is considered
vandalization.
