Polar bears are powerful and beautiful creatures. They roam
the ice sheets of the arctic. Thanks to their black skin and
blubber, they are able to survive the cold, harsh
temperatures.
3

Polar bears enjoy at diet of seal and walrus, they are
carnivores. Their diet rarely consists of vegetation.
They play a vital role in their ecosystem by leaving the
remains of their prey for other wildlife to eat.
4

Polar bears have fur that insulates their bodies and large
front feet that make them excellent swimmers. Polar bears
can be found in sub-populations such as, Alaska, Canada and
Greenland.
5

The polar bears habitat is important. It is located at the
edge of ice, which leads to open spaces, where the ocean is
easily accessible.
6

When a female polar bear is pregnant, she needs to eat a lot
of food and reserve enough fat for the denning period.
Females dig into the snow for protection and insulation in
preparation of child birth.
7

Cubs are born between November and January. Cubs are
very small at birth, only 1.3 pounds or about half a
kilogram.
8

Polar bears live around 15 to 20 years. Polar bears are
mammals, so cubs depend on their mothers milk to help
them grow and develop.

9

Polar bears do not have any natural enemies, but they
protect their young aggressively. Polar bear offspring are
fully matured by 2 years old.

10

Polar bears are fearless predators, which make them
dangerous to human beings.
11

Sadly, polar bears have qualified to be on the International
Union for Conservation (IUCN) of Natures Red List of
Threatened Species. In Russia, they are classified as a Red
Data Book Species, meaning they are either rare or
endangered.
