Ever since Ellie was a baby she has known 

nothing but the U.S. National Zoo. It was her 

home. She had made many friends, but her 

best friend was a tiger named Teddie. Each 

day Ellie and Teddie met different kids visiting 

from all over the world. Subsequently it made 

Ellie wonder what life would be like outside the 

gates that had always surrounded her. 

One day Ellie and Teddie noticed a new bird singing 

in the nearby trees. Ellie and Teddie knew all the 

birds and were good friends with them, yet they had 

never met this cute blue bird before. Therefore they 

headed over to meet her. 

They soon found out her name was Bettie 

and she too, like all the children, lived 

outside the gates. Furthermore they asked 

Bettie questions of what it would be like to 

be live where she lived.

In due time they decided to adventure in the 

city with Bettie. They began to make plans of 

what they would see outside of the gates. With 

a long list of items to cross off, all the way 

from museums to monuments, they started 

out on their adventure. 

First stop, the Capitol Building! They walked 

around and admired the amazing detail on 

the building. They loved the open grass, 

whereas they missed theirs that they had 

back at the zoo. 

Notwithstanding, Bettie tried to calm their homesick 

minds by bringing them to the Washington Monument, 

on the National Mall, with all of its abounding grass.

After a good stroll through the grass 

the three friends ended up at the 

Lincoln Memorial. Moreover, they too 

loved the Memorial but missed their 

playful toys that were back at the 

Zoo. 

Bettie then took Ellie and Teddie 

over to the cherry blossoms. They 

began to eat them because they 

looked so delicious, ultimately 

discovering that they were just 

appealing to the eye.
