Jaguars

Jaguars are 

large 

animals that 

live in the 

Amazon 

rain forest. 

Jaguars are 

usually found 

by the Amazon 

Basin, which is 

a large river. 

Jaguars are carnivores, which means they eat meat.

Their diet 

consists of 

many animals 

that are 

much smaller 

than them.

Jaguars are endangered - there are only 15,000 

left.

They are the 

third-largest 

feline species, 

after the tiger 

and the lion.

They grow to be as long as 5 or 6 feet.

Jaguars learn 

to hunt after 

being with 

their mothers 

for two years.

They become independent after they are 

two years old.

Jaguars are the largest cats in North and 

South America. 

They run as 

fast as 80 

kilometers 

per hour, or 

50 miles per 

hour.

They dip 

their tails 

into water 

to lure fish 

like a 

fishing line. 

Humans and jaguars are similar because they 

are both mammals.

They are nimble animals - they move very quickly.

It is quite 

obvious that 

jaguars are 

different from 

leopards and 

cheetahs. 

Their scientific name is Panthera onca.

Jaguars are not quiet - they can roar very loudly.

Jaguar's 

spots are 

called 

rosettes 

because they 

are shaped 

like roses. 

Jaguars are good swimmers. 

Jaguars mark 

their 

territories by 

clawing nearby 

trees.
