One day Pip went home to his iceberg
looking really sad. "What's wrong?"
asked Pip's mom. "Today we learned
the beatitudes in religion class." Pip
answered. "That's great! Then why are
you sad?" Mom said. "I don't
understand them," said Pip. "That's
okay, I can help you learn the
beatitudes," answered Mom.

"Blessed are the poor in spirit for theirs is the
kingdom of heaven" (Matthew 5:3)

"The first beatitude means that we
should share with others and thank God
for our blessings. Do you remember
giving our extra fish to Polly?" asked
Mom. "You said we gave Polly fish
because she needed the fish and we
had extra to share," Pip answered.
"Sharing our fish was the right thing to
do, and it made Polly very happy!" Mom
said. "I'm starting to understand!" said
Pip.

"Blessed are they who mourn, for they will be
comforted." (Matthew 5:4)

"The second beatitude means that we
should comfort the penguins that are
upset or sad. Last week Alice's husband
died, so I went to her igloo to comfort
her. Do you remember Alice's
husband?" asked Mom. "He was a great
penguin," Pip answered."Yes he was. I
brought her my homemade tuna dip
and I prayed for her," Mom said.

"Blessed are the meek, for they will inherit
the land." (Matthew 5:5)

"The third beatitude means that we
shouldn't show off our talents and use
them to do good things. One way to
live by this beatitude is to sing at a
nursing home. The elder penguins
enjoy the visitors and the music," said
Mom. "I am getting this," Pip said.

"Blessed are they who hunger and thirst for
righteousness, for they will be satisfied."
(Matthew 5:6)

"The fourth beatitude means that we
should be fair and equal. It also means
that we should believe in God and trust
Him. When we pray, you can ask God to
help you with your problems. Do you
have a test with your swimming lessons
tomorrow?" asked Mom. "Yes, I do. I can
ask God to help me stay safe and try my
hardest," Pip answered. "Exactly," said
Mom. "I understand this," Pip replied.

"Blessed are the merciful, for they will be
show mercy." (Matthew 5:7)

"The fifth beatitude means that when we
love and forgive others, they will love and
forgive us too," said Mom. "Last week I
accidentally broke Linda's plate. I
apologized to Linda and she forgave me. A
couple of days later Linda told me that
she broke my ice sculpture. Linda forgave
me for breaking her plate, and I forgave
her for breaking my ice sculpture," said
Mom. "I get that," Pip said.
