Today was the big day!   Sally ant was 

so excited!   She was all grown up and 

ready for her first day of work.

She felt a warm, spring breeze as she

poked her head above ground.

"Wow!" she gasped.   "Everything is so

colorful!   Not at all like the dark

tunnels of the colony."

She stood, marveling at the colorful

flowers.

"Get to work!"   Shouted a fellow ant.

Sally scurried off.

"I'm going to be the best worker that

Queen Ant has ever seen!"   Sally said

to herself.

Sally was busy searching for food when

she noticed a shadow pass over.   She

glanced up to see a fluttering splash of

color.

"How beautiful!"   Sally was

mesmerized by the brightly colored

creature.  

"Excuse me for staring," she said, "but

I have never seen a creature as 

beautiful as you."

"Of course you haven't," said the

creature smugly.   "I am a butterfly,

the loveliest creature in all the world!"

Sally watched the butterfly gracefully

flit from flower to flower.

"Maybe we could be friends." said the

ant.

"What? Friends!   You've got to be

kidding!" laughed the butterfly. 

"Why would a beautiful creature like

myself want to be friends with such a

plain, dull thing as you?"

It flew off, without looking back.

With a deep sigh Sally went back to

work.   She spent the rest of the day

moping.   Poking under a few pebbles,

peeking behind some twigs, but not

having much luck.   She just couldn't

keep her mind on her work.

 "I wish I had beautiful colors." Sally

mumbled.

"And how wonderful to fly around with   

such delicate wings! 

 All I will ever be is a plain, dull worker

 ant."

Suddenly Sally noticed the other ants

heading home.

"Oh dear," thought Sally, "Queen Ant

isn't going to be very happy when I

show up empty handed."
