Halloween had approached, though very slowly and
teasingly, thus all of Eliza's dreams and thoughts had
been about candies, chocolates, costumes, spooky
movies, etc. She was a fine, young girl who was always
called upon and sought out adventure. Eliza was eight, so
naturally she could not wait till it got dark; she would go
out joyously, trick-or-treating with her family and
friends at that time. Right now she was helping her
parents decorate the house; her parents were on the
second floor, and she was on the first.

“Eliza!” her mom hollered, “It’s four o’ clock, so you
can go call your friends and ‘trick-or-treat’ now.”
“Okay!” she hollered back. She called her friends,
however, none of them seemed to be home.
“Hmmmm......They must be outside already! No wonder
they aren’t picking up the phone.” she thought. She
went into her room and wore her witch costume, and
then picked up her pumpkin pail. She was now prepared
to go outside.

She strolled outside for a while, not knowing where
all her friends were and where to go for trick-or-
treating first. She kept on walking, and sometimes
skipping throughout the neighborhood; pondering on
where her friends might be. She gave up eventually and
decided to go trick-or-treating herself.

"Hmmm...Where should I start trick-or-treating?"
Eliza thought, "I'll go to the best houses first", she
decided. She went to go to the biggest and most
elegant looking houses first. As she had thought, the
largest and fanciest houses gave out the most candy.
One thing, though, that freaked her out was the blazing
fact that no one, but her was outside trick-or-treating.

As she made her way from the largest, most elegant
looking houses, to the smallest, most hideous looking
houses, she came upon a tiny, but terrifyingly ghostly
cabin. Vines had grown all over the door, windows, and
literally everywhere around the house, and most
prominently only one light was on in the great cabin. A
lot of the windows were shattered, too. “I am not going
to even bother to ring that house’s doorbell,” she
muttered to herself.

She turned around to leave, but realized she was
behaving cowardly. After all, it was just an ordinary
house, right? She went to the house and rang the
doorbell. “Ahhhhhhh!” she gasped. A bell at the top of
the cottage rang deafeningly loud. When it stopped
ringing, she knocked on the door which terrifyingly fell
over. She yelped and trembled, causing her pumpkin pail
to fall down. She quickly turned around to pick up her
pail, and get as far away as possible from the spooked
house. She moved a few steps, but then thought, "Wait
a minute. Is this a trick? I can't be tricked. I should be
getting a treat, which I deserve to receive." With her
chin up, high in the air, she stepped over the fallen
door, and went on in.

“Clang! Cling! Clang! Cling!” sang the chimes above the
door. There was no wind whatsoever, so how were the
chimes clinging and clanging together? She had just
gotten into this place and she was already getting
nervous. If she were to go through this eerie place, she
would have to improve her attitude a great deal. "Hello?
Anyone home?" she yelled into the darkness. She
walked a few more steps steadily and came upon a set
of stairs. She slowly and steadily crept up the stairs,
breathing hard.
