This is John B. Chapin.
He lived from 1829 to 1918.
He wanted to help people who have
mental illnesses.

Sometimes someone with a mental
illness doesn't look sick. Just like you
can catch a cold, your mind can be sick
too.
John B. Chapin wanted to be sure that
people with mental illnesses were
treated fairly.

John B. Chapin began his career at New
York State Hospital where he became a
doctor.
He later started working at the New
York State Lunatic Asylum in Utica. He
worked with people with mental
illnesses there.

Under direction from Dr. John P. Gray,
John B. Chapin began to study those
with mental illnesses who lived in
almshouses.
Almshouses were a place for poor,
mentally ill or homeless people to live.
This type of home was paid for by
people in the area as a way to give
back. John B. Chapin found that living
conditions were not very good.

John B. Chapin supported the use of
state money to build asylums. These
asylums would be safer and cleaner
places for people with mental illnesses
to live.
He wanted all people who were mentally
ill to be moved out of almshouses to the
new asylums for better care.

Chapin pushed to make changes in the
law. Mentally ill people were still treated
poorly in almshouses because they were
seen as too sick to be helped. Chapin
believed there should be no difference in
care for people who are only a little sick
and those who are really sick. Everyone
deserved to be treated the same way
and the government should protect it's
people. Mentally ill patients deserved
care.
