Mourning Cloak Butterfly

A Mourning Cloak is a type of butterfly.

The Mourning Cloak is a part of the 

Brush-footed butterfly family.

The Mourning Cloak begins as a caterpillar before 

it becomes the butterfly.

It is during the spring time that the Mourning 

Cloak breaks out of it's chrysalis.

The Mourning Cloak is found throughout 

Europe, Central Asia, and North America.

This butterfly will sometimes feed on flower 

nectar and rotting fruit.

The Green Hawthorn tree is one of the 

butterfly's favorite places to feed from.

Mourning Cloaks hibernate during the winter 

time under loose bark.

Mourning Cloak's can be identified by their 

brown wings, tan edges, and bright blue polka 

dots.

Before forming the chrysalis, the caterpillar 

hangs upside down on a safe branch and 

forms a J shape with it's body.

The butterfly must keep warm in order to be 

able to fly.

Morning Cloaks begin their lives as larvae.

The Mourning Cloak larval phase is when they 

live as caterpillars.

The scientific name of the butterfly is Nymphalis 

antiopa.

The caterpillar can only become a Mourning 

Cloak butterfly once it pupates (creates it's 

chrysalis).

As a caterpillar, the pointy bristles are not 

poisonous.

After being laid, the caterpillars quickly hatch! 

Only spending 10 days in the egg.
