One night, in a small town in Pennsylvania, three
families had newborns that were diagnosed with the
same disease that none of them had ever heard of.
Maple Syrup Urine Disease or abbreviated as MSUD.
Their initial thoughts were that it was spreading through
the hospital. Little did they know that it was actually
from their genes...

the same doctor and nurses looking after them.
Let’s meet the families.

In room 201 we have the Jones. Their baby Daniel has type 1A
MSUD. They recently moved to Pennsylvania and and have no
ties to a particular religion or lifestyle.
MSUD affects 1 in every 321 general public.

In room 203 we have the Penners. Their baby Jacob also
has type 1A MSUD. The Penners have lived here along
with many generations before them. They are Old Order
Mennonites.
1 in every 13 Old Order Mennonite has type 1A MSUD.

And, in room 205 we have the Shermans. Their baby
Rebecca has type 1B MSUD. They come from an Eastern
European Jewish family. They are Ashkenazi jews.
1 in every 97 A Jewish contracts this disease.

Dr. Limb decided to take blood samples from each
baby, after birth, just to make sure everything was
going as planned. That was when he found that they all
had MSUD. The next step was explaining to each family
what their child has.

does not provide correct instruction
for the proteins to work together and
break down amino acids.”

“This causes a build up of amino acids and
causes the baby to have a sweet smelling urine,
which is implied in the name. They also can
have poor
feeding habits, be lethargic, vomit, have
developmental delays,
brain swelling, and muscle contractions.”
“Don’t worry though, we will give you
detailed instructions about a low
protein diet and nutritional supplements.
There is no medication, genetic therapy,
or other treatment for this disease.”

to be okay?"
“If you and your wife keep Daniel on the right diet, his
symptoms should not act up. But, you really need to monitor
his diet. The symptoms can come back and worsen to a coma or
death. I don’t say this to scare you, I want you to know how
serious it can be though.”
