Hey Bob, how did the universe
form?

Well George, it all started
13.7 billion years ago with a big
bang...

13.7 billion years ago, a section of space,
the size of an atom, gathered too much energy. There
was a huge explosion, and thus everything we know
today was created.

The Sun was the first thing to form. It is a ball made up of hydrogen and
helium. These materials started to draw together and gravity caused them to
start spinning. It turned them into a flat disc. In the middle, the material
clumped together to form a protostar that is now known as our Sun.

It is thought that Mercury was hit by a massive object that caused the outer layer
of the planet to be blown off, this would explain why it is much smaller than the
rest. It is also thought that the Sun's temperature burnt off the outer layer. Since it is the
closet to the Sun, the temperatures are always extremely high. It gets up to 700 K during
the day!

When the Sun was formed in made very strong winds, solar winds, that
pushed every other material around. They started clashing together and
formed big clumps. They kept growing and that is what we now call our
planets. This is how Venus was formed. The atmosphere is mainly made up of
carbon dioxide!

The Earth was formed just like how the others were, matter in space all
collided together creating bigger and bigger masses. As the masses grew, the
gravitational pull also grew bringing more objects to collide with it. After Earth was
a huge fireball almost.

It is believed that the water from the planet came from one or both of these
places. One believe is that the steam given off from the volcanoes created
rain that filled the Earth with water. Another believe is that huge comets
brought with them water to the Earth. Many astronomers still argue over
this today!

Mars was formed as most of these planets were, with small clumps of particles
colliding together and as they clumped together their gravity became more strong
and more and more particles collided to it. The heat eventually created the
different layers of the planet. This took about 100,000 years.

Jupiter is thought to have been formed by core accretion. This is that after the Sun formed
the solar winds blew the particles all around and they clumped together to form a massive
clump of particles. The heat then caused the different layers. Jupiter is two and a half
times more massive than all of the other planets in the solar system combined!
