Fun Fact: In the Bible, the
image of blowing wind
symbolizes war or conflict

In a land known as Judah, there was once a man named Nahum. He was
a real prophet who was called by God to help lead the people of Israel to
become better people and to warn them about consequences that might
occur if they did not follow the path of God. He spoke the truth about
who God was and how God acted. He was rarely listened to and disliked
by most of society.
Nahum was a latter prophet, meaning his story is recorded in the
"Prophetic Literature Books" in the Bible and his own book, the Book of
Nahum, is named after him.
The Book of Nahum in the Bible is very short. Nahum is a minor prophet
because his book in the Bible is shorter than those who are considered
major prophets. Even though his Biblical book is shorter, this does not
make him less important!

A name is very important. Your name is what you are
called and how people distinguish you from others.
Nahum's name was very important as well, because the
people recognized him through his name.
The name Nahum is most likely a shortened form of the
name Nahumiah, which means "Yahweh Comforts".
Yahweh was the name that the Israelites used to refer to
God.

Nahum was born in the late seventh-century. Nahum was an
Elkoshite, meaning that he was from the town of Elkosh. The
location of Elkosh is not known, an no other background
information about Nahum's family or life growing up is known.
Elkosh is sometimes taken to mean, "God is harsh".
This translation may seem rather severe, but the way Nahum
speaks of God at the beginning is similar to this. He emphasizes the
fact that God is all-powerful and will retaliate strongly against his
enemies. Nahum starts off by saying, "A jealous and avenging God
is the LORD, an avenger is the LORD, full of wrath; The LORD
takes vengeance on his adversaries, and rages against his
enemies."

Although Nahum was born centuries ago, he still had a job,
very much like the adults around you have jobs today.
There are different theories about what Nahum might have
done as a job, and some people believe that Nahum's job was
to be a prophet for the Temple of Israel, a very important
job.
