multiplication - an operation that gives the total number when 

you join equal groups.

factors - numbers that are multiplied to give a product.

multiple - the product of a number and other whole numbers.

array - a way of displaying objects in equal rows.

product - the answer to a multiplication problem.

Math is everywhere around us! 

Most people do math on a daily 

basis without even realizing it!

For example, 

each basket of 

oranges cost 

$1.00 each.   A 

basket holds and 

average of 12 

oranges.   If I buy 

$5.00 worth of 

oranges, how 

many oranges 

would I have in 

total? 

$ 1.00 = 12 oranges

$5.00 x 12 oranges = 

60 oranges total!

C'mon! Let's go to the fair. One of the 

most common things people do at the fair 

is to eat. 

Here we are at one of the food booths. Would 

you like a hot dog? It's going to cost $4 per hot 

dog. I'd like 4 hot dogs and i'm sure you 

wouldn't mind eating 2. How much would that 

cost for us?

4 + 2 = 6 hotdogs

6 hot dogs x $4 each = $24 total!!!

What if you were a teacher and had 32 students?   You 

wanted to figure out how many groups you'd have if you 

put 4 students into each group? 

How about a sleepover party 

for your birthday!? Mom 

wants you to figure how 

many friends you're inviting 

so she can order the right 

amount of pizza.

Each person averages 

about 3 slices. Janet, 

Michele, Beth, Maria, 

Sammie, and Pam are 

coming. How many slices 

of pizza will feed you and 

your 6 friends?

6 friends + you = 7 

people

7 people x 3 slices = 

21 total slices
