soil gives our plants nutrients that help our
plants grow. nutrients also help humans and
animals. there is also sod ans sod is thick,
lush growth of plants and the roots become
so entangled it protects the soil. sod helps
keep the soil in place.

soil erosion can happen with loss of
fertility. this happens when construction
workers are removing soil and not putting
it back. this can be avoided by spraying
water so it would stay or placing the soil
back when they are finished.

loss of topsoil and the dust bowl are
both examples soil loss and damage.
loss of topsoil is when there is no
topsoil to protect the soil from being
taken away from water and wind.
the was a time on the late 1800.
farmers began to farm in the great
plains. farmers didn't realize the
more they took from the land , the
less they could take from it. Large
droughts were happening. a drought is a
reduction of rainfall. droughts were
happening over and over again.
there is also ways to conserve soil. one
way is contour plowing. this is when
farmers plant in a pattern on slopes.
this slows down the water. the slower
the water the less it would take with it.
another way is conservation plowing.
so what they do is that instead of
plowing they let the dead material lay
and plant on top of it.

the last thing is crop rotation, so they
would plant one crop one year and
another crop the next year. most likely
that crop would take up less from the
ground and actually return some
nutrients to the ground.
