Area and Population

Laos is a landlocked country 

in Southeast Asia. Laos 

covers a land area of 

236,800 km2. It is bordered 

by Myanmar (Burma) and 

China to the northwest, 

Vietnam to the east, 

Cambodia to the south, and 

Thailand to the west. Its 

polulation is about 

6,800,000 people (2014). 

Laos' official language is 

Lao. Besides, there are 

Khmu, Hmong, French... 

The capital is Vientiane.

Economy

Lao's economy has developed quite 

rapidly recently. However, it depends 

heavily on investment and trade with 

its neighbours, Thailand, Vietnam, 

and, especially in the north, China. 

Subsistence agriculture still accounts 

for half of the GDP and provides 80% 

of employment. Currently, Laos is a 

low income country. 

Despite that fact, Laos is rich 

in mineral resources and 

imports petroleum and gas 

and has plentiful water 

resources and mountainous 

terrain enable it to produce 

and export large quantities of 

hydroelectric energy which 

can improve the economy.

Sports

The martial art of muay Lao, the national sport, 

is a form of kickboxing similar to Thailand's muay 

Thai, Burmese Lethwei, Malaysian Tomoi, and 

Cambodian Pradal Serey. It incorporates 

punches, kicks, elbows and knee strikes.

Football has grown to be 

the most popular sport 

in Laos. The Lao League 

is now the top 

professional league for 

association football 

clubs in the country. 

Since the start of the 

League, Lao Army FC 

has been the most 

successful club with 8 

titles, the highest 

number of championship
