On May 21, 1994 Elizabeth Logan Reed was
born to two loving parents. While the doctors
were checking her over to make sure she was a
healthy baby girl, they noticed something was
different about her and went to run some
tests...

When the doctors came back into the room
with the new family, they told the two parents
that Elizabeth had Albinism. Albinism is an
inherited condition (a person gets it form their
parents) where a person can have a lack of
pigment in their hair, eyes, and skin. There are
several types of Albinism that are found in all
races of people(everyone has equal chance)
and that it doesn't matter if Elizabeth had been
a boy or girl she still would have probably
gotten it.

The term Albinism (a person with this is called
an albino sometimes) comes from three main
people who diagnosed the condition. These
people are Sir Archibald Garrod(in the
1800's),Balthazer Tellez (a Portuguese explores
in the 17th century), and Linnaeus (a Swedish
naturalist of the 18th century).

Elizabeth's parents where shocked to hear this
and asked the doctor how she got this
condition. The doctor explained that Albinism is
a recessive genetic disorder. One or both of
Elizabeth's parents have an abnormal gene
(one that has the Albinism coding) that allowed
them to pass it on to Elizabeth.

Elizabeth's parents were shocked and asked
what that meant for their little girl. The doctor
explained that Elizabeth would have very light
colored hair, skin, and eyes (white, red, and blue
are common colors, but the coloring depends on
the type of Albinism). It also meant that Elizabeth
could have eye problems (Ocular Albinism is the
most common type) and skin problems (sun
burns the skin easily). To prevent some of these
problems, Elizabeth will have to wear protective
clothing/sunscreen and in the future consult an
optometrist to discuss any future eye problems.

Elizabeth's parents were saddened by this and
asked if this could have been prevented or if it
could be treated. The doctor told them that a
pre-natal test could have been conducted, but
that there would have been nothing they could
have done. The doctor also informed them that
there was no cure or treatment for Elizabeth's
condition ,but that her coloring could change
slightly as she got older.

Elizabeth's parents were saddened by this, but new
that Elizabeth would grow into beautiful little girl and
that she would be loved.
And she did!
