"Chris, do you hear those dogs barking?" I
asked as we walked down the street getting ready to
meet some friends for dinner.
"Yes" he said, "there is a dog shelter across the
street from the restaurant". He pointed to the big
tent and the crates set up underneath.
Chris looked at me and automatically knew that
I wanted to go see the dogs. "Alright" he said and
we walked across.

As we walked around we petted all the dogs. Most were
friendly, while some were barking and scratching on their
crates to get free.
Just as we were about to leave a new dog was coming
in, this was the first time I ever laid eyes on "Jimmy Chew".
I looked at him, all skin and bones and almost started to
cry.
Melissa, the director of Ruff House Rescue, noticed my
reaction. She said "yeah, he's had it pretty rough, he was
abused badly by his owners. He's 30 lbs under weight and
has burn marks all over him. He needs to find his "furever"
home, someone who will love him and treat him right."

When we left I couldn't get "Jimmy Chew" out of my mind. I couldn't
understand how could anyone treat an innocent animal that way.
Throughout dinner Chris noticed that I was quiet and distracted.
"What's the matter love?" he asked.
"I just can't stop thinking about
that dog, I really need to help
him" I replied. "I don't want him
to stay there or to ever get hurt
again."
Although he too was upset over
seeing the dog that way, he didn't
know what to do either. We were
living in a new apartment and
couldn't take the dog home
with us.

That night I couldn't sleep. I kept tossing and turning
thinking about Jimmy Chew and hoping he was alright. I
even woke Chris up a few times. He genuinely felt bad but
knew that we wouldn't be allowed to take him home.

A few days went by and I was still very upset
thinking about the dog. Hoping to feel better, Chris
and I went to the shelter to visit Jimmy Chew. We
asked if anyone had come to see him or was
interested in him. The response was no. This upset
me even more than before.

The next morning I woke up and Chris wasn't home. A
little while later, he called me and said "get dressed, I have
a surprise for you."
As I got ready I couldn't imagine what the surprise
could be. He picked me up and we left. During the car ride
he wouldn't tell me where we were going. But as we got
closer my heart started beating faster and faster. Finally, we
pulled up to Ruff House Rescue.
"I spoke to Pete our landlord" he said "We can get the
dog!"
I gave him the biggest hug ever and jumped out of the
car. I was so excited and tears were falling from my eyes.

We filled out the adoption
papers and they checked our
references.
After everything was
completed, and we were
getting ready to take our
beautiful dog home, I couldn't
help stare at both of my boys,
in complete awe and total
happiness. I felt so much love
that day and was so grateful
for having such an amazing
fiance. He knew how important
this was to me and he made
the unbelievable happen.
