In a hot, dry desert, there lived a very curious
armadillo named Artie. Being an armadillo, Artie
had thick, hard plates over most of his body.
These plates were a protection against other
animals that might try to eat him.
Artie loved the desert, but he was always
wondering what it would be like to live in a
tropical jungle. At times, the dryness of the
desert would make him long for a cooler, damper
climate.
One day, when Artie was hungrily foraging for
food, he found himself wandering into an area
that was not familiar to him. The smells were
different, the ground felt different, and the
area was cooler than in the desert. He
thought, Aha! I have discovered the jungle.
There were big, fluffy clouds hovering in the
sky above him. It occurred to him that he may
have traveled to a tropical jungle.
Artie continued to mosey along, curiously
looking at and smelling things along the way
because that was what Artie was: curious. The
interesting thing about Artie was that he didn't
scare easily, so traveling to a different area
didn't frighten him. He continued up a very tall
mountain. The air became thinner as he
ascended and Artie began to feel short of
breath. As a result, Artie needed to find a
place to rest.
Once Artie found a suitable place to rest, he
fell deeply asleep. When he woke up, it was
dark and he didn't know where he was. There
were strange looking animals surrounding him.
One of the animals was clawing at his back.
Artie's thick armor protected him so the
animals' claws didn't really bother him, but he
was feeling somewhat uneasy because there
were so many of them. Artie decided that he
would play dead and hope they would just go
away.
Eventually, the creatures, getting nowhere with
Artie, lost interest and disappeared. Artie
breathed a sigh of relief. He stood up and
surveyed the area around him. There was a
snow-capped mountain and lots of tall, green
trees with an abundance of needle type leaves.
The air was cooler here, but he wasn't sure
that a tropical jungle would have snow-capped
mountains. So, Artie made his way past the
snow and the pine trees.
Artie wasn't really sure where he was going,
but he thought it was turning into a great
adventure. His surroundings slowly began to
change and he noticed that the weather was
becoming warmer than he had felt on the
mountains. The interesting thing was, there
were all these new sights: animals walking on
two legs; others that had funny looking,
roundish legs; and large boxes that some of
the animals would go inside. There was a large
area that was covered in water. He realized
that he was very thirsty.
He made his way down to the water's edge and
stopped to take a drink of water. "ICK! ACK!
PTOUI! Artie spit the salty water out of his
mouth. "YUCK!" he yelled. Now he was really
thirsty. By this time, Artie was also quite
hungry. Down the beach a little ways was a
funny looking animal with claws. This animal
might be breakfast. Artie approached the crab
and leaned in to take a bite. The crab reached
up and took hold of Artie's nose. Artie was so
flabbergasted and in so much pain that he
didn't know what to do. This creature had a firm
hold on him and he couldn't get away. Try as he
might, the crab would not let go.
