Life During the 1920s
There were many changes during these times. Population grew a ton. Alcohol was made illegal and was banned on January 16, 1920 by the 18th Amendment that was later repealed by the 21st. Transportation was a big change, automobiles became more affordable. Another big change was in fashion. Skirts and hairdos were made shorter and women wore lipstick. This is when the Flappers came about. The work place also changed, women could work for wages. Sports, Movies & Films, and Air Travel became huge. Families changed as well. Birthrates dropped, divorce doubled and women were treated equally in the marriage.

Population
Population grew as people moved from the farms & towns to cities. In the beginning of the 1920s, New York had a population of 5.6 million. Chicago had nearly 2 million, Philadelphia had almost 2 million, and another 65 cities had 100, 000 or more. Chicago was an industrial power house. Immigrants had to adapt to urban environment for everyday life. American communities had a population of 2500 to more than 1 million. City dwellers tolerated drinking, gambling, and casual dating. There came corruption due to the growing populations and influences of alcohol. Prohibtion then came along.

Prohibition
The manufacture, sale, and transportation of alcoholic beverages being legally prohibited is what prohibition is. The 18th Amendment put prohibition into action on January 16, 1920. It was later repealed by the 21st Amendment.

5
Prohibition Fails
Prohibition failed because people made their own illegal moonshine and people smuggled liquor. There were bootleggers and speakeasies. Al Capone was a gangster who smuggled liquor and some say prohibition encouraged his actions. Carey Nation was known for being an opposing figure. She attacked alcohol-serving establishments with a hatchet. She was jailed as a result of these efforts. Her work had not gone undone, the 21st Amendment repealed the 18th Amendment and finally put an end to prohibition in 1933.
6
Automobiles
People could easily travel throughout the cities into the country. This made people move from cities to suburbs. Henry Ford used assembly lines to produce cars. The assembly lines allowed the cost of cars to decrease. It went from $850 in 1909 to $360 in 1916 then $290 in 1924. The car you could get was the Model T Ford.
