Famine and Overpopulation
I was born at a time in in Chinese history where there was a 56% population increase and famine became a problem. There were so many mouths to feed and we struggled to get by. My mother and father we're adamant that if we just followed the teachings of Confucius everything would turn out all right, it always had in my countries history. As a Confucianist, I trusted my elders and figured the hard times wouldn't last forever.

Opium Wars
With increasing European influence in our ports, one horrible down side was the introduction of Opium from South Asia. As a young adult I experienced some of the most awful addictions from people I cared about. I began to worry about the safety of my wife and kids as our government had had enough of the trade and wanted westerners out of China. What followed was truly embarrassing to our country. We were defeated easily and I lost my son to the cause. This is when I began questioning my life.

Convention of Peking
Christian missionaries had been making an impact on a small amount of people in China for the last few years but after the two Opium Wars, China was opened completely to trade and mission work and this changed my life forever. When I was looking for purpose I found the mercy and grace of the Jesus that the Europeans told me of. I often got singled out for my faith and excluded from my normal walks of life. As a christian in China, those who remained true to Chinese culture were out to get those of us who went completely anti-confucian and converted to Christianity. While we felt like we could still hold true to our culture, others did not. The next chapter in my life is by far the scariest.

Taiping Rebellion
Now there wasn't just unrest over Christianity there was a full out war which the Chinese saw as needed to destroy the westernization happening in the country. My family and I feared for our lives and our house was robbed multiple times and we had to always be on alert. After the bloody revolts and when the dust settled I knew what I must do for my family.
