Ronald Reagan, 1964
"We are at war with the most dangerous enemy that has ever faced mankind in his long climb from the swamp to the stars, and it has been said if we lose that war, and in so doing lose this way of freedom of ours, history will record with the greatest astonishment that those who had the most to lose did the least to prevent its happening."

“I don’t think that unless a greater effort is made by the government to win popular support that the war can be won out there. In the final analysis, it is their war. They are the ones who have to win it or lose it. We can help them, we can give them equipment, we can send our men out there as adviser, but they have to win it, the people of Vietnam, against the communists.”
Kennedy is saying that in order to make the Vietnam work you have to have the support of the people and that everyone has to agree and want to help and to support the war. He’s saying that we can help them just by giving them weapons and money that we don’t have to go to Vietnam and fight.

Oh, what did you see, my blue-eyed son?
Oh, what did you see, my darling young one?
I saw a newborn baby with wild wolves all around it
I saw a highway of diamonds with nobody on it
I saw a black branch with blood that kept drippin’
I saw a room full of men with their hammers a-bleedin’
I saw a white ladder all covered with water
I saw ten thousand talkers whose tongues were all broken
I saw guns and sharp swords in the hands of young children
And it’s a hard, and it’s a hard, it’s a hard, it’s a hard
And it’s a hard rain’s a-gonna fall

Bob Dylan wrote this song in the year 1963 when many people were protesting the Vietnam War. He describes what many soldiers coming home from the war felt like. He also showed how America felt about their political leaders lying to them.
Bob Dylan did an accurate song based off the feelings of the American people while they were in the Vietnam War.

"I grew up with my father in the Navy during the Korean and Vietnam Wars. While I was a youngster he was gone overseas 9 months of each year. The main memory I have of the Vietnam war is, in particular, one trip to San Diego that my mom and four brothers at the time went to go pick up Dad at the port. Before we could get to the Navy Port we had to drive through a warehousing area that was ringed with protesters that made me think that my father was a monster because he served in the Vietnam War. At times we were being spit on and yelled at, screamed at, until we passed into the navy base where we finally found peace and respect for my father. -Gary Quaethem, around the age of 13 at the time. My dad grew up in America at a time where being a Military family was, for the most part, hard and many people hated them for it. He is saying in this quote that while the media got some of the facts right, not all of them were right. They touched very little on what the soldiers coming home felt like. Can you imagine what it felt like being spit on when you only defended you're country? It must have felt horrible. And many of the families got that same treatment because they supported their fathers, husbands, sons, and brothers.

"I saw courage both in the Vietnam War and in the struggle to stop it. I learned that patriotism includes protest, not just military service."
-John F. Kerry

This quote means that just because the media says something it doesn't mean it is true. In the case of the Vietnam war the media only reported, in many cases, what the public wanted to hear. Many protesters forgot that the people (soldiers) that were fighting were fighting for people's freedoms.

“I believe this resolution to be a historic mistake. I believe that within the next century, future generations will look with dismay and great disappointment upon a Congress which is now about to mistake such a historic mistake.”
Senator Wayne Morse is saying that he believes that the Gulf of Tonkin Resolution was a mistake and that the US should not have gone to war and entered Vietnam. He believes that the people will not support the war and that even after the war is finished people will still hate it for future generations.
—Senator Wayne Morse (D-OR) on the Senate’s impending vote to adopt the Gulf of Tonkin Resolution on August 7, 1964. AK

“We do this to increase the confidence of the brave people of South Vietnam who have bravely born this brutal battle for so many years with so many casualties. And we do this to convince the leaders of North Vietnam—and all who seek to share their conquest—of a simple fact: We will not be defeated. We will not grow tired. We will not withdraw either openly or under the cloak of a meaningless agreement.”
President Johnson is saying that south Vietnam has lost too many brave people for them to give up now. That the US and south Vietnam will not be defeated that easily, and that we will never be tired we will continue to fight forever. That the US and South Vietnam will not surrender to a meaningless treaty or agreement that you offer.
Lyndon Johnson, speaking to the nation on April 7, 1965 explaining his decision to send U.S. combat troops to Vietnam
