In response to the formation of NATO, the Soviet Union and their communist allies created an alliance known as the Warsaw Pact.

The Warsaw Pact included Albania, Bulgaria, Czechoslovakia, East Germany, Hungary, Poland, and Romania. Their purpose was to protect one another if the enemy tried to attack.
