“Now, Dexter, we want you to come home, but Dr. Hope thinks that you might need to stay here for the rest of the week,” Mrs. Wallace, Dexter’s mom, replied sincerely, “I pinky promise to give you all the ice cream and jello you want if you stay here until Dr. Hope lets Daddy and I take you home.”

“I hope that I can go home tomorrow, or even next week! I would really love to go home and play outside,” admitted Dexter as Dr. Hope double checked the beeping machines.

As Dr. Hope exited the room with Dexter’s parents, she explained, with a tear in her eye, “Dexter seems to have a high fever; usually, this fever would not concern me.” Dr. Hope pauses, “However, Dexter was not supposed to turn six years old, let alone ten. I think you should prepare yourselves.”
“But Dexter is a fighter! Dexter is your fighter!” Mrs. Wallace responded through her sobs.
“I am so sorry, Mrs. Wallace, I will monitor Dexter overnight and we will go from there in the morning.”
