A biome is a large region of Earth that has a certain climate and certain types of living things. Major biomes include tundra, forests, grasslands, deserts, freshwater, and marine. The different biomes make up the earth.
3
The Tundra is an extremely cold climate. It has about 20 cm or more of permafrost (ice) per year. The plants are very low to the ground for warmth.
4
Some plants are bearberry, arctic moss, Caribou moss, Diamond leaf willow, Labrador Tea, Pasque Flower, and the Tufted Saxifrage. Some animals are caribou, Ermine, water birds, mosquitoes, polar bears, arctic fox, white wolves, grizzly bears, gray falcons, bald eagles, bumble bees, and squirrels. Ravens, snowy owls, pikas, and pocket gophers are also found in this harsh biome.
5
The forest biome experiences all seasons, it has about 40-50 cm of rain per year, and plants change colors during the seasons. Located in the U.S., Canada, Europe, Japan, China, and Russia. The trees can grow up to 379 feet tall!
6
Some plants in the forest are broadleaf, deciduous trees, such as maple, oak, hickory, and beech, and evergreens, such as hemlock, spruce, and fir. Some animals are hawks, cardinals, snowy owls, pileated woodpeckers, white-tailed deer, raccoons, opossums, porcupines, and red foxes.
7
The desert biome is either extremely hot, or extremely cold. Deserts get less than 25 cm of rain per year. Plants have spines to protect from animals. It also covers 1/5th of earth’s surface. They are located in Chile, Africa, North America, Antarctica, and Greenland.
8
Plants have hard outsides and hollow insides to hold water. Examples of this would be a cactus. Other plants that live here are sagebrush and creosote bushes. Some animals that live here are Armadillo Lizard, Banded Gila Monster, Bobcat, Cactus Wren, Coyote, Desert Bighorn Sheep, and Desert Kangaroo Rat.
