INTRODUCTION
Without thinking about it we rely on colour in our everyday lives, we rely on colour to help us identify things we wouldn't be able to if it were in black and white. But before we learn about why albinism is serious we have to get an understanding of what caused it. Albinism is caused by a mutation in one of several genes. Each of these genes provides instructions for making one of several proteins involved in the production of melanin. Melanin is produced by cells called melanocytes, which are found in your skin and eyes. A mutation may result in no melanin at all or a significant decline in the amount of melanin. In some types of albinism, a person must inherit two copies of a mutated gene one from each parent in order to have albinism.Albinism affects animals in more than just their appearance, it also affects their survival skills. In the wild Animals may use their unique coloring for protection, for aggression, for attracting a mate or for finding a meal. In some cases, extra melanin pigments serve as environmental protection from the harmful rays of the sun

Camouflage
Many animals have evolved to have some form of camouflage, which is an adaptation that allows animals to blend in with certain parts of their environment. Camouflage increases an animal's chance of survival by hiding it from predators. This gives the animal a higher chance of being able to successfully reproduce and carry on the species. Camouflage is also used by some predators as a tool for hunting. For them, being able to blend in with their environment gives them an element of surprise and increases their chance of successfully obtaining food. On the vast savannas of Africa, leopards use their coloration and spots as a hunting tool, because it enables them to blend in easily with the tall grasses as they stalk their prey.
Without this element to help them many albino animals get picked out in the wild because they can't hide from their predators. Some albino animals also die of starvation because they cant sneak up on their prey.

How It Affects The Eyes
Ocular albinism is a genetic condition that primarily affects the eyes. This condition reduces the coloring of the iris, which is the colored part of the eye, and the retina, which is the light-sensitive tissue at the back of the eye. Pigmentation in the eye is essential for normal vision. Ocular albinism is characterized by severely impaired sharpness of vision and problems with combining vision from both eyes to perceive depth . Although the vision loss is permanent, it does not worsen over time. Other eye abnormalities associated with this condition include rapid, involuntary eye movements eyes that do not look in the same direction, and increased sensitivity to light. Many affected individuals also have abnormalities involving the optic nerves, which carry visual information from the eye to the brain.
