Vasco da Gama was born during 1460 or 1469 in Sines Portugal. He was the third son of a noble family. His father was Estêvão da Gama and he was the commander of a fortress in Sines. It is not certain but, people believe that Vasco da Gama trained in mathematics and navigation. We know very little of Vasco da Gama’s Childhood and Early life.

Vasco da Gama had four brothers and one sister. His siblings names were Paulo da Gama, Aires da Gama, Teresa da Gama, Joao Sodre da Gama, and Pedro da Gama. Estevao da Gama, his father was a wealthy knight. Isabel Sodre, his mother Isabel Sodré, came from a well known family. His parents were very important figures and when Vasco da Gama grew up he became a very important figure to.

Many people believe the Vasco da Gama trained in mathematics. Some people also believe that he studied under the astronomer and astrologer Abraham Zacuto. Vasco da Gama always wanted to join the navy, when he was old enough he did. In the navy he learned to navigate and work on ships. He worked very hard to become a good sailor.

Vasco da Gama worked hard to learn navigation and how to work on ships. In 1492 King John sent Vasco da Gama to the port city of Setubal and the Algarve. He was sent him to seize French ships because, they attacked Portuguese ships. With the successful completion of his mission, he proved himself to the king and everyone else.

In 1497 Vasco da Gama was chosen for an expedition to India. With his experience he was chosen to lead the voyage. Vasco da Gama's job was to find a sailing route to India and the East. On July 8th of 1497 he took four ships for the voyage. Vasco da Gama started the voyage with his ships pointing south.

After several months of rough sailing Vasco da Gama and his men finally rounded the Cape of Good Hope. After they rounded the cape they started sailing up the eastern coast of Africa. In January they neared what is now called Mozambique. Many of Gama’s crew members were sick which forced them to anchor for rest and repairs for about a month in Mozambique.

In the beginning of April the ships reached what is now called Kenya. Then they set sail and in 23 days he and his men crossed the Indian Ocean. The trip across the ocean was long, hard, and dangerous. Finally on May 20th they reached the long awaited detestation, Calicut, India. He and his men started to gather goods and supplies for the trip home.

In August of 1498 Vasco da Gama and his men started to sail home to Portugal. By early 1499 almost all of the crew members had died from sickness. Vasco da Gama’s first journey was about 24,000 miles and took him about one or two years. Only 54 out of 170 of Vasco da Gama’s crew survived the trip. Two years after leaving Portugal Vasco da Gama and some of his men finally returned home and were greeted as heroes.
