The Romans were people who lived in Italy two thousand years ago.They built big cities like Rome.Most of the buildings were large and made from stone.

Only rich children went to school.The lessons were mostly reading and writing.Sometimes,they did a little counting and arithmetic.They used ink pens to write on a paper called papyrus.The younger children wrote on a little wooden board,covered with wax.They used a pen called a stylus.

Roman Numerals
They used their hands and fingers for counting as far as the number 39.For larger numbers ,they used the following letters - L for 50,C for 100,D for 500 and M for 1,000.

The Romans had the best army in the world.It was made of legions.Each legion had 6,000 legionaries. Every legion was divided into groups of 100 men.The officer in charge of 100 men was called a centurion.

Legionaries had long,curved wooden shields.The shields had metal edges and a metal stud in the centre.Sometimes the legionaries placed their shields together in a special shape called a 'tortoise'.This was to protect them from arrows and spears.

The Romans at Play
One of the Romans' pastimes was watching sports.They liked concerts, plays and circuses.However,they liked sports with bloodshed best of all.They built big - open areas for the shows.These were call amphitheatres ,and were round in shape.

Looking at Evidence
Here is the picture of the amphitheater built by the Romans at El Djem in Tunisia.The coliseum is located in the center of Rome.It was used when the film Gladiator was made because it was in such good condition.The construction started in 70 AD and took about 10 years to complete.Height:157 FT Perimeter:1788 FT

Looking at Evidence
It is the largest amphitheatre ever built in the Roman Empire.It could easily fit a football field.There were four main floors.Each with 80 arches.The coliseum could hold 50,000 spectators.With seating for nobles and the common man.It was surrounded by a 15-foot wall with seating above.Below the coliseum were numerous rooms and tunnels.

Looking at Evidence
Some Housed Gladiators and Wild Animals.Others contained pulleys, Ramps, and Hand - Operated Elevators.Over 1 million animals died in the course of the coliseum games.The last recorded games were held in the 6th century.The coliseum had survived many earthquakes that caused the south side to collapse.

The shows in the amphitheatre were cruel and bloody.Soldiers called gladiators trained in special schools.Huge crowds watched as they fought against wild animals and against each other.
