Native Americans were the first inhabitants in North America before the arrival of Christopher Columbus and the Europeans. There are many tribes in the Native American community. Native Americans were grouped in tribes based on their culture, religion, life styles and where they were located. Some of the most famous tribes are the Navajo, Cherokee, Sioux and Chippewa. They have many similarities and differences.

Navajo Tribe
The Navajo are natives of Arizona, New Mexico and Utah. Navajos started out as hunters and gatherers but as time went on they got into trade. Navajo men were usually warriors, leaders and hunters. The women in the Navajo tribe were famers and tended more to the household responsibilities. Many Navajos were heavily into weaving and jewelry making.
Sam wants to save enough money to buy jewelry from a local store to support his tribe. He wants a necklace that cost $4.00, a ring that cost $2.50 and a bracelet that cost $6.00. If Sam already has $3.50 how much more money does Sam need to save to buy everything he wants? Explain the steps you took to solve the problem.

The Cherokee are natives in Georgia, North and South Carolina, Tennessee, Kentucky and Virginia. The men in the Cherokee tribe were in charge of war, diplomacy and hunting. The Cherokee women were in charge of farming and the household. Both participated in artwork, music and storytelling. The Cherokee Tribe lived in cabins and logs and were really spiritual and religious.

Sioux Tribe
The Sioux people are located in Wisconsin, Minnesota and North and South Dakota. Women in the Sioux tribe were in charge of the household and also built their houses. They were well known for their buffalo-hide paintings, pottery, quills, calumets and beadwork. The men were hunters and warriors and made sure to protect their family. They lived in large tipis about 12 feet high.

Jackson wants to be different and build a tipi that is 16 feet tall. How many more feet will his tipi be compared to the large tipis that were built by the Sioux?
