Hannibal Barca was born in Carthage in approximately 247 BC. He was the son of the general Hamilcar Barca. After Carthage’s defeat by the Romans in the first Punic War, Hamilcar devoted himself to improve Carthage and the future of it and made his son swear to have no mercy toward the Roman Empire. When Hannibal was 26, he was given control of an army and went out to strengthen the Carthaginian control of Iberia. In 219 BC he attacked the town of Saguntum causing anger in Rome, starting the second Punic War.

In spring of 218 BC, Hannibal charged through the Pyrenees toward Gaul in southern France with over 100,000 troops and nearly 40 Elephants. He faced little resistance from the local forces of Rome. The Roman general Scipio tried to challenge him at the Rhone River, but Hannibal's men had already crossed it, moving towards the Alps. Hannibal crossing the Alps was an extraordinary achievement. With a cold and wet climate, his army faced attacks from indigenous tribes who rolled stones in their way, cutting them off. After just over two weeks, Hannibal exited the Alps with just 20,000 men, 6,000 Cavalry and all 37 of the Elephants
