One of the most popular, world-wide events will begin on August 5, 2016 in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil.
The 2016 summer Olympics will host more than 10,500 athletes from over 206 Countries competing in 28 sports.
2
3
With all the athletes, spectators, and events, the Olympic Committee needs to carefully plan where to put everyone.

4
5
The Olympic Committee decided to divide the venues into four locations, (zones) called Deodoro, Marcana, Barra, and Copacabana.
Map of Rio de Janeiro showing the venues of its bid for the 2016 Summer Olympics.

6

Use this map of the Olympic zones to answer the following problems.
A) Label the x and y axis
B) Which zone has the following coordinates, (5,4)?
C) Plot the coordinates of one more Olympic zone.
7
Some events will be held outside of Rio. There are 5 venues in the cities of São Paulo, Belo Horizonte, Salvador, Brasília, and Manaus that will host most of the soccer events.

8
If all 10,500 Olympic athletes decided to attend soccer games at the same time at the 5 stadiums outside of Rio, how many athletes would be at each stadium?

9
The Olympic Aquatics Stadium has beautiful artwork by Adriana Varejao. This will be the location for most swimming races.
10
The Maracana Stadium, officially known as the Jornalista Mário Filho Stadium, will be used for the opening and closing ceremonies as well as the soccer finals. The Olympic Aquatics Stadium holds a large amount of people, with a seating capacity of 15,000. However, the Maracana Stadium can hold a whopping 74,738 spectators!

11
The Maracana Stadium can seat about 75,000 people. The Olympic Aquatic Stadium seats 15,000 people.
If all the seats were filled at every event, how many events would you have to hold at the Olympic Aquatic Stadium to equal the amount of people seated at one event at the Maracana Stadium?

12
However you watch the 2016 Rio Olympics, on television or live in one of the Olympic venues, this will be a historic event. (16 days and counting!)
