General George Smith Patton, Jr., was born on November 11, 1885 in San Gabriel, California. In 1904, he enrolled in VMI in preparation for West Point. He also enrolled at West Point that same year. In 1909, he attained the rank of Cadet Adjunct and graduated 46th out of 103. He was then commissioned as a 2nd Lieutenant in Calvary and reported to the 15th Calvary in Fort Sheridan, IL. His military career was one of the most colorful of all 20th Century military leaders.

He took part in the Stockholm Olympics in 1912, and placed 5th in the event. In 1913, he attended the French Calvary School and studied French Sword Drill. Patton became the U.S. Army's "First Master of the Sword." He also designed the U.S. Army's M1913 Saber. He also graduated from the Mounted Service at Fort Riley, Kansas. In 1915, he served as aide to John J. Pershing in the Mexican Expedition and was promoted to First Lieutenant.

In 1917, Patton organize the American Tank School at Langres, France. He trained the 304th Brigade, which were the first 500 soldiers in the U.S. Tank Corps. Patton was temporarily promoted to Lieutenant Colonel. In 1918, leads 304th Tank Brigade into battle (WWI) and recieved DSM, DSC, Purple Heart, and Silver Star. He was then temporarily promoted to Colonel. In 1918, WWI ended. The next year, he returned to the United States.

In 1932, he graduated from Army War College. In 1935, he was promoted to permanent rank of Lieutenant Colonel. Interestingly, he wrote a prophetic paper on the possibility of a Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor. In 1939, he was promoted to permanent rank of Colonel, and considered retiring from the U.S. Army. He did not and assumed command of the 2d Armored Division at Fort Benning, GA. He also was promoted from Brigadier General to Major General.

In 1942, he was appointed to desert training near Indio, CA. He assumed the role of 1st Armored Corps at the Desert Training Center. Patton played a lead role in Operation Torch, in which he commanded the Western Task Force during the Allied invasion of North Africa. He then enters Casablanca and takes French Morocco. In 1943, he assumed command of II Corps and wins victories of Gafsa and El Guettar. He was temporarily promoted to Lieutenant General, again.
