Proclamation of 1763The British issued this document that forbade colonists to settlewest of the Appalachians.The Proclamation of 1763 was also
issued because the British thought that defending western lands
would be costly.This Proclamation angered colonists because they
thought they had won the right to settle the Ohio River.
Quartering ActsIn 1765 Parliament passed theQuartering Act.This act required colonists to
quarter or house British soldiers and provide
them with supplies.The act also was a
cost-saving measure for Parliament.
Stamp ActIn 1765 Parliament passed the stamp act. This law requiredall legal and commercial documents to carry an official stamp
showing that a tax had been paid. The Stamp Act was a new
kind of tax that most colonists protested against.
Townshend ActsIn 1767 Parliament passed his plan, whichwas the Townshend Act. It suspended New York's
assembly until New Yorkers agreed to provide
housing for the troops.The other acts placed duties, or
import taxes, on various goods.
Boston MassacreThe Boston Massacre happened on March 5, 1770.
A group of youths and dockworker started trading
insults in front of the custom house. A fight happened
and soldiers fired. Four laborers died, including Crispus
Attucks.
Tea ActParliament kept the tea tax to show
that they still had the right to tax the
colonists.It led to the Boston Tea
Party.In 1773 parliament passed the
Tea Act. Tea was popular, so protests
against the Tea Act took place.
Boston Tea PartyThe Sons of Liberty organized what came to
be the "Boston Tea party", in Boston.On
December 16, 1773, a group of men
disguised as Native Americans boarded 3 tea
ships, and destroyed 342 chests of tea. They
believed that Britain would see how strongly
colonists opposed taxation without
representation.
