Isla was one very excited girl when she heard that the circus was coming to town. She would get to see all of the animals that she loved so much. There would be elephants, lions, tigers, and maybe even monkeys. Isla’s parents bought tickets as soon as they went on sale and soon it would be show time!

Isla could barely sit still during the car ride there. “Okay sweetie, we’re here” her Mum said. "Hooray!" Isla screamed. “Take my hand. You don’t want to get lost.”“Yes Mum” Isla replied with her eyes wide with wonder. There it was! The big tent where all of the action would happen. The yummy smell of popcorn and cotton candy filled the cool night air.

As they walked closer to the entrance, Isla saw a monkey staring out from a very small cage. He looked sad sitting there all alone. She waved and said “Hello” to the monkey. Hearing her voice, the monkey looked up and waved back. Her big smile had started to turn into a frown. "That poor little monkey."

THE LONDON CIRCUS

A bright spotlight shone on a man wearing a big top hat. “Welcome to the London Circus!” he shouted. He wore a sparkly purple jacket and had a curly moustache. "I want to go home" Isla whispered to her Mum. "But the show hasn't even started yet. Give it a chance." Isla sat back and folded her arms across her chest.

The lions were on first and they looked so scary and fierce. Isla hid behind her Dad when they came out. They roared so loud that Isla put her hands over her ears. She would sometimes sneak a peek at the lions between her fingers, but didn’t like it when the man with the whip started to yell at them.

Fizz the Clown drove a tiny car on stage. When he opened the door, a group of small dogs jumped out. He danced around with them and did all sorts of tricks that made Isla giggle. The pups jumped through hoops and wore little bow ties and hats. Isla was finally beginning to enjoy the show.

A group of monkeys were led onto the stage by a mean looking man who called them all by name. Isla spotted the sad monkey she saw earlier that evening. The monkeys didn’t feel like performing so the crowd started to boo. Afraid of all the noise, one of the monkeys jumped into the audience. He found his way to Isla and threw his arms around her neck.

After the monkeys left the stage, Isla suddenly ran off. Panicked her parents went chasing after her but couldn’t find her. “Isla? Where are you?” She had run over to see the monkey again. “Hello there” she said to the monkey who was resting in his cage. “My name is Isla” she told him before giving him her home address. “You can come visit me anytime."

Isla was so tired that she fell asleep during the car ride home. Her Dad carried her upstairs and tucked her into bed. The next day she told her Mum that she never wanted to go to the circus again. She just sat there at the kitchen table barely touching her porridge. "Why don't you go to the park today." "Umm, okay."

Isla was greeted by all of her friends from the neighbourhood. She was a popular kid and had lots of friends. For the rest of the day Isla was able to forget about the poor monkey she saw last night. She ended up having a fun-filled day skipping, singing nursery rhymes, and playing with her best mate Zachary.

Back at the circus, the monkey sat inside his cage. He was cold and tired. One of the workers opened the cage to feed him but forgot to close it. With the cage left ajar, the monkey tiptoed out of the tent and hopped aboard a scooter. The worker chased after the monkey but it was too late. He had escaped!

The monkey was finally free from his cold, steel cage. He decided to have some fun in London. He had his picture taken in front of Big Ben with a couple of tourists. He visited Westminster Abbey, The Tower of London, and Piccadilly Circus. He even stopped at a local pub to watch a little footy.

Feeling a bit knackered from all of the fun he had that afternoon, the monkey took a nap in Hyde Park. He woke up and decided to visit his dear friend Liz (Queen Elizabeth) at Buckingham Palace. “Hello Nigel dear” said the Queen. The pair had a lovely chat as they enjoyed some tea and crumpets before. Then it was time for Nigel to go find Isla.

Isla was fast asleep when she heard a kerfuffle outside her bedroom. She got up out of bed and put on her slippers. She looked around her room and outside the window but didn’t see anything. She crawled back into bed and tried to get back to sleep. When she rolled over she felt something furry lying next to her. It was only a monkey. A monkey!!!!!

Before she could scream, the monkey put his paw over her mouth. "Shhh! It's me Nigel from the circus." “What are you doing here?” Isla whispered. “You gave me your address last night and told me to visit anytime. Well, here I am.” Isla's parents raced down the hall to see what all the noise was coming from Isla's room. "Just had a bad dream. G'night Mum. G'night Dad."
31
32
"We'll deal with this tomorrow Nigel. Let's just get some sleep." Isla pulled the covers on top of the monkey who had the best sleep of his life. The next day Isla would be celebrating her birthday with her Grampa and Nan. Nigel decided to spend the day in bed getting caught up on Coronation Street reruns. All Isla could think about was Nigel. Would her parents let her have a monkey?

BBC NEWS TONIGHT
34
After a lovely afternoon, Isla and her parents headed for home. Isla ran upstairs to see Nigel while her Mum and Dad watched the BBC News. "Good evening England. I'm David Brent with a special report. A monkey is loose in London. He escaped from The London Circus yesterday and was seen all over the city. If you see him please contact our News Hotline."
