Integers
An integer is a whole number that can be positive or negative. For example: -5 is an integer and so is +5. Every number is an integer if it has an opposite. Zero (0) is not an integer for it does not have an opposite. Zero is the origin. The origin is the point or place where something begins. For example: the sea will be the origin. Sea level equals 0. If I say that the rock is 500 feet below sea level, the math equation for this would be
0-500=-500. So the rock is -500 feet below sea level.
Here is the rock 500 feet below sea level

Absolute
Value
Absolute Value is the value of a number based on how many units its distance is from zero(0). The Absolute Value sign can be recognized by one straight line on each side of the number. Example: |-5|, or |5|. If you saw a problem saying, "Solve|-5|," your answer would be 5 because -5 is 5 units away from zero. It is the same with 5 because all absolute value numbers are postitive(+).

Zero Pairs
A Zero Pair is an integer along with its opposite on the number line and when they are combined, they equal zero. So the Value of a zero pair is 0. The additive inverse is a rule that shows using opposite integers to get a zero pair. The value of a zero pair is zero because the integers cancel each other out.

+
-
= 0 (zero pair)
Subtracting
Integers
To subtract integers, you need to use integer addition and the additive inverse of the subtrahend. The subtrahend is the quantity or number that is to be subtracted from another. In the equation 5-18=?, we would change the sign to positive and change the second number to a negative number (5+-18=?) and figure out the answer. To do this just remember to "Add a line and change the sign."
"Add a line and change the sign."
-6-(-5)=?
change the - to a + and change -5 to +5
-6+5= -1
-6-(-5)=-1
